Metro: Last Light

I would assume that most gamers out there have at least heard of Metro 33, a game developed by 4A Studios which is based on a novel by the same name. Well, in 2013 the second part of the Metro game series will be released, and the follow up is called Metro: Last Light. A few days ago the team behind Metro: Last Light released a cinematic shortfilm, called Entering the Metro, which I guess is mostly to hype the upcoming release of the game .

Before we go on any further I’d like to explain what Metro is for those who haven’t read the book or played the first game. Well, the year is 2033, and 20 years back, in 2013 to be precis, a nuclear war broke out and mankind was destroyed. Except for a few who hid underground, in the Metro. The Metro games take place in Russia, Moscow to be precise, where the Metro had a second dark purpose, appart from working as a Metro, it was built to work as a shelter for a possible nuclear war with all the tension in the air during the cold war. But in 2013, this has been forgotten, by everyone but a few who have been awaiting the faithful day of armageddon.

Well with the background story behind us, as mentioned before, the game takes place in 2033 and you take on the role of Artyom and you learn that mysterious creatures, called Dark Ones are threatening the Metro where you have taken refuge. Simply as I do not wish to spoil anything if anyone out there still want to play Metro 2033 and explore the game themselves, I will not tell you much more about the plotline, but the game is a dark, action / survival horror FPS game.

As a horror fan, I must say that I absolutely loved Metro 2033,and I am of the opinion that it is one of the more underrated games. And I must say, I’m truly looking forward to Last Light as well, even if the game is just half as good as Metro 2033, I will be truly happy. It may not be the typical survival horror game, as it’s mixed up with the regular action FPS elements as well, but they managed to create some truly enjoyable moments. All in all I’d say Metro 2033 was one of the best games of 2010.

If we take the cinematic shortfilm as a referance and Metro: Last Light would turn out to be just as good as the shortfilm, then we’re looking at a game which could very well compete for quite a few game of the year awards in 2013, although that’s a long way into the future. I’m kind of naive when it comes down to things like this though, I always hope for the best, and sometimes I begin to believe it myself and then I turn out to be completely disappointed when the release day comes. Although in this case I really hope it will not turn out that way, as for the first time in many years I’m really looking forward to a certain game. I think the last time I was this hyped about an upcoming game release was when Resident Evil 5 was about to hit the stores. And that was three years ago, in 2009.

As Last Light won’t be released for about another year we can do nothing but wait and see, but I truly do hope that the game lives up to its hype this time. Thank you for reading and feel free to drop a comment below.
